Weardale Plein Air Festival – Terms & Conditions

Event Dates: Friday 29th – Sunday 31st May 2026
Location: Weardale, County Durham

By registering for the Weardale Plein Air Festival, participants agree to the following terms and conditions:
 

1. Registration

  • Standard participation fee: £20 (non-refundable).

  • Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of payment.
     

2. Payments

  • All payments are non-refundable under all circumstances.

  • In the unlikely event that the Festival is cancelled by the organisers, participants will receive a full refund.
     

3. Competition Rules

  • Artwork must be created on location in Weardale during the Festival dates.

  • Only work produced between 29th–31st May 2026 is eligible for judging.

  • Artists must bring their own materials and easels.

  • Completed work must be submitted by the deadline specified at registration.

  • Judges’ decisions are final.
     

4. Cottage Garden Painting Experience & Workshops

  • These activities are optional add-ons with limited places.

  • Organisers reserve the right to make substitutions of venues if necessary.
     

5. Health & Safety

  • Participants are responsible for their own safety and equipment.

  • Artists should take appropriate measures for outdoor painting (e.g. sun protection, weather gear, stable easels).

  • The organisers are not liable for any loss, theft, damage, or personal injury occurring during the Festival.
     

6. Intellectual Property & Promotion

  • By entering the competition, artists grant the organisers permission to photograph their work for promotional purposes.

  • Copyright remains with the artist.

  • Any sale of work during the Festival is the sole responsibility of the artist.
     

7. Conduct

  • All participants are expected to behave respectfully towards organisers, fellow artists, the public, and property owners.

  • The organisers reserve the right to withdraw participation without refund in the event of inappropriate behaviour.
     

8. Agreement

By registering and submitting payment, participants confirm that they have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms & Conditions.

ITINERARY

DAY ONE

Friday 29th May

10:00am – 4:00pm: Artist-Led Paint Out
After registration, we’ll kick off the weekend with an inspiring paint out at one of our favourite spots along the River Wear. This charming riverside location has it all: little waterfalls, wooden footbridges, lush flora, and, if you’re lucky, a glimpse of our local heron! A comfort hub will be available, stocked with essentials to keep your day running smoothly.


 

6:00pm – 8:00pm: Artist's BBQ (Add-On)​
Join us for a warm and welcoming BBQ from 6pm at a charming local country pub, where artists can come together to relax, connect, and share ideas. With good food, a friendly atmosphere, it’s the perfect chance to meet fellow creatives and enjoy a laid-back evening in great company. Tickets will be limited!

DAY TWO

Saturday 30th May

The Big Brush Off Plein Air Competition

 

10:00am – 11:00am: Registration
Pick up your competition number and have your painting surfaces stamped (up to four surfaces per artist).

 

11:00am: Pep Talk & Rules Briefing
A quick pep talk to explain the rules and wish you good luck before you head out to paint.

 

11:15am – 3:00pm: Painting Time
Choose your perfect location from our carefully selected suggestions and immerse yourself in your artwork.

 

3:00pm – 3:30pm: Return & Presentation
Bring your completed pieces back to the Town Hall for display. Our judges will take this time to review your work while you enjoy some refreshments.

 

4:00pm: Winners Announced & Prize Giving
The Town Hall will open to the public, and we’ll reveal the winners of each category.

 

4:00pm – 6:00pm: Public Exhibition
View all the incredible artworks created during the competition.

 

6:00pm – 8:00pm: Life Drawing with Cheese & Wine
End the day with a relaxed life drawing session, paired with delicious cheese and wine.

DAY THREE

Sunday 31st May

10:00am – 4:00pm: Exhibition of Works
Up to three pieces per artist will be on display for the public to enjoy.

 

10:00am – 4:00pm: Cottage Garden Experience (Add-On)

Paint in a beautiful cottage garden and enjoy a posh cream tea lunch.

12:00am – 2:00pm: Guided Art & History Walk (Add-On)

Learn about Weardale’s rich history from a local historian while sketching famous historical features on a short guided walk.

 


10:00am – 4:00pm: Artist Led Workshops (Add-Ons)

Two more professional artist-led workshops will also be available, offering inspiration and guidance to round off an unforgettable weekend.
